With a heavy heart, MN Bridge reports that we have lost one of our longstanding members: Shel Weinstein. For all of the thirty years that I have enjoyed bridge, and for many years prior to that, Sheldon had been a mainstay of our community. Shel was an active and enthusiastic participant in local and tournament bridge. Of course, many are aware that Shel made another important contribution to the world of bridge: siring and training international star, Howie Weinstein.
Shel was much more than a bridge partner or opponent to many of us, though. Exceptionally knowledgeable about history, government, religion, politics, business and much more, sitting down to lunch with Shel was a treat. He was a human form of Encyclopedia Britannica and Google - long before the latter had ever been invented.
Shel had a heart of gold, and the highest of ethical standards. We see that exhibited internationally in Howie's bridge; those of us who know both Weinsteins are well aware of where Howie got it.
Those who wish to remember and honor Shel are welcome to do so on Tuesday, February 19th, at Temple Israel in Minneapolis, 1PM. Our condolences are extended to the entire Weinstein family.
We will miss you, Shel.
Additional service information for Shel is here.
My thanks to those who are sending in submissions of their remembrances of Shel. This comes from long time bridge partner and friend, Jeff Arenson.
On Saturday, the Bridge Community lost a fine bridge player. The World lost a very honest man, and I lost a good friend. Shel Weinstein passed away on that day.
Shel and I had been playing bridge on a weekly basis for 15 to 20 years. I will miss him.
We also played in Arizona in past years, but this year we just talked on the phone. Shel was having problems with a blood condition.
At this point in a bridge eulogy, you are supposed to put in a bridge hand where the deceased beat up the opponents. I know there were some; I just can't remember them. In any case, Shel had a great sense of humor and he was beloved by so many of us. The Democratic Party has lost a staunch supporter.
