I think the organization synonymous with charity in Des Moines bridge is the FreeStore.

One of the board members is a regular at our club and I believe that several bridge players have volunteered there.

In 2008 the FreeStore served 210 families, which included 287 children!

Founded in 2001, the FreeStore provides household items and furniture free of charge to women when they leave the Children & Families of Iowa's Domestic Violence Services. We also provide these same items to needy families from other social agencies for a nominal fee.

The FreeStore is entirely run by volunteers, with NO paid staff. Volunteers are always needed to pick-up furniture, organize items in the warehouse, greet clients, help clients move furniture to their new apartments, and raise funds.

In Rochester we have often given the proceeds from our local charity games to Channel 1, the food shelf here. In these tough economic times I think we should keep organizations that help needy people high in our priority list

I'd delighted you are thinking of organizations we might support this year. The FreeStore received a small grant last year. As you think of deserving organizations, be certain to inform your Unit Board representivies to the District 14 Board Meeting in May at the Gopher Regional. I'll also keep a list of suggestions. Sharon
