District 14 Rankings

One of the thrills of bridge is winning masterpoints and attaining new heights in rankings.  As of June 30th, you can view the players throughout District 14 who have earned a new ranking, from Junior Master to Emerald Life Master.

Particular congratulations to those who have reached some of the highest rankings.  Cindy Balderson and Terry Beckman, from the Twin City area, are now Emerald Life Masters (7500-10,000).  Kathy Beckman and Sue Jackson, also from the Twin Cities, are now Gold Life Masters (2500-5000).

Well done, all - and good luck moving toward your next ranking!

Bill Quinn - 1932-2011

This has been a difficult week for our Midwest bridge community.  We are sad to report the death of Bill Quinn from Ellsworth, Wisconsin.  Please read about Bill at MN Bridge.

Helen Gustafson - 1923-2011

Always meticulously coiffed and beautifully atired, Helen Gustafson looked as if she belonged at an elegant ladies luncheon rather than competing at the bridge table.  But Helen did the latter for decades, with a tenacity and vigor that few could match.

With almost 14,000 masterpoints, Helen ranked seventh in District 14 for masterpoint achievement.   Her win in the Rockwell Mixed Pairs in 1983 with husband John gave her the national title she needed to earn the title of Grand Life Master.  Helen added another NABC win in 1997 with the Truscott Senior Swiss.  You can read much more about Helen and her long, rich life here in the Des Moines Register.

Helen had a most successful career at the bridge table and with bridge activities of all stripes, loads of friends and a large and loving family.  We feel fortunate to have had Helen among us, and we will miss her tremendously.

Our deepest condolences to husband John and the rest of Helen's family.

100 Clubs in 100 Days

As many of you may be aware, Craig Robinson, our ACBL president, is touring 100 clubs in 100 days.  The exciting news is that Craig soon will be coming to cities in District 14!

Craig has tentative plans to be in Fargo August 10th, the Twin Cities on August 11-12, and possibly Des Moines on the 12th, too.

As soon as Craig's schedule is more definitive, we will let you know.  Be sure to take advantage of this excellent opportunity to meet our president on our turf!
