Cody gets this way with his downstairs cage. He creates a "nest" in the back corner with shredded paper towels and if I reach in for any reason (his door is open most of the day) to put food in or change the water, he lunges at me, although it's usually only temporary--after a few seconds it seems to click that I am his favorite person and I am giving him something he wants. Then the incredible hulk-bird is all sweet and charming again. Definitely some kind of hardwired "protect the nest" switch gets flipped.
