My national bridge tournament ended yesterday. I played in 3 events, and made it to the finals of two. In the two final events, I was in contention both times; 9th going into the final session of one, and 4th in the other. Alas; went the wrong direction in each. Nevertheless, made the overalls.
Thus, more of my highlights this tournament involved my photography and reporting. Perhaps my favorite story to cover was the "Card Rook Pairs." This event is for very young kids. Some start as early as 7! Although the kids don't understand a great deal of the game at this stage, they still seem to love it and have a marvelous time. Two 9 year old boys told me of their developing partnership - and friendship. One also explained to me that he was teaching "his mom and brother, too" - since bridge is even more fun than scrabble!
So many children learn to compete in physical sports. Developing competition of the mind in an enjoyable setting can be a fine foundation for a child, too!
