In recent times, my life has become significantly busier. Thankfully, the real estate market has improved -but with it, more work. I also do a variety of tasks for the bridge world, and - I compete, too. Add in more responsibility for my parents, maintaining a house, some attempt to maintain me .... and just the general requirements of daily living - "free time" seems virtually non-existent.
Nevertheless, when something is compelling - one finds time. So today, I headed out to KIPP Stand Academy, a charter school for college prep middle schools. There, I became more educated about how many in our community are devoting themselves to education. For parents with hefty resources, finding good schools generally isn't difficult. Yet for those parents who face big struggles, figuring out how to get their child a decent education - and a school where they are physically safe - can be a challenge.
In addition to learning about KIPP, I had the pleasure of being able to photograph the kids attending KIPP. These kids are enjoying school, learning, and have devoted teachers. Students and parents sign contracts, where they pledge to do what is necessary to stay in such a fine school.
If you happen to have some loose change - then you might think about sending it to KIPP. No matter how busy your life might be - we all should be able to do something to help kids who are willing to help themselves.
