You may also wonder why the photograph above is listed with this post. We wanted to acknowledge congratulations to Valentin Kovachev. Val is a frequent visitor to District 14 tournaments - and - he is also a new husband! Mrs. Kovachev joined Val at the Nebraska Regional. We are happy to extend congratulations to the happy couple.

Today, May 20th, is the kick-off day for the Gopher Regional in suburban Minneapolis-St. Paul. The day began with a "Learn Bridge in a Day" seminar held by master instructor Patty Tucker. One hundred people attended!
This evening, the first official bridge sessions will begin. For those who aren't already at the Bloomington Ramada, waiting to bid and play their first hands, we have an entire week ahead for you! For more information on the schedule and for reports, photos and Daily Bulletins by Mike Cassel, be sure to stop by MN Bridge throughout the week.
District 14 has two additional exceptional regionals coming up this summer, both featured in July. The beginning of the month is the Des Moines Regional; later is the Nebraska Regional in Council Bluffs.
We have a lot of wonderful regional competition coming up in our district! Be sure to enjoy as much of it as you can!
District 14 has two great regionals on the horizon.
The first begins in less than a week. Head to Council Bluffs on Monday, August 30th, for the Nebraska Regional. If you've attended before, then you know what an incredibly fun tournament it is! If you have not - then you owe it to yourself to find out!
Later in the month, on August 28th, the Fargo Roughrider Regional begins. Although with this summer, winter may seem like a welcome respite, the Roughrider is a great tournament to enjoy before the cold weather begins to set in.
Thanks to our many tournament chairmen and volunteers who make these tournaments happen. We sure hope a lot of you are going to be able to attend and rack up the masterpoints!
Not only has the summer of 2012 been roasty-toasty. We have a variety of hot tournaments coming up for District 14 players!
First on the schedule is the upcoming Summer NABC in Philadelphia. Four teams of District 14 players will be competing in the first event: Grand National Teams. Our qualifiers are listed here; good luck to all in the event! We hope that many others from our district will travel to this NABC. Philadelphia has a fine venue and schedule; should be fun for all.
Speaking of fun - our own district has some excellent regionals scheduled! First up is Council Bluffs, starting on July 30th. Co-chairs Cookie Hoberman and Jan Loftin and their legion of volunteers do a fabulous job. 2012 should be their best yet!
At the end of August, head north for Fargo. Free lunches and a host of great events are planned by Chairman Rosie Vanek.
Then - an October surprise. This year, our District will be host to the USBF Regional. Starting on October 8th, come to suburban St. Paul for a schedule packed with a wide variety of events. Co-chairs Patti Stuhlman, Sue Jackson and Wayne Gergen have much planned for you. Enjoy the beautiful fall colors and win points at this bonus tourney!
Carole Miner and Cindy Balderson, one of District 14's top partnerships, came within a hair of winning the Smith Life Master Women's Pairs. Leading after the first final session and leading going into the final round, Carole and Cindy ended up third. They needed a little over 4 matchpoints to move into the #1 slot.
They have knocked on the door more than once. One of these times, I am certain they are going to nab the top spot! Congratulations to them for their fine showing!

Those who traveled to and from Sioux City for last week's regional enjoyed glorious weather, hospitality to match and great competition.
Results from all the events at the Sioux City Regional can be found here. Overall, best in show goes to Jim Nash and Pierre Flatowitz. Their just over 87 masterpoints put them at the top of the list for awards.
Our thanks to tournament chair Sarah Imig for all her hard work, to our excellent directors, to the hardworking volunteers and, of course, all the players who made the effort to compete and go for the gold!
