Many Minnesotans - and friends from elsewhere - were glued to much of the action in Detroit this week. At Bridgebase, we watched for days as one of our state's top pairs, Cindy Balderson and Carole Miner, competed in the trials to select two teams to play in the upcoming World Championships. Their team: JoAnn Sprung, Janet Robertson, Cindy Bernstein, Sally Wheeler and our girls, did extremely well. They needed to place in the top half of a two day round robin to get to the knock-out stage - and they did in style; second spot. They then won their next match to get to the finals. The winner of this match would be USA #1.
Unfortunately, they lost that match as the Moss team came on strong late. Still, the event was "double elimination" - so - they had a chance in a play-off match to become USA #2. Sadly, it was not to be. The Joel team played superbly and in good luck; the Sprung team lost. For those interested in some of the results and hands, you can view them here.
Nevertheless, we would like to applaud Carole and Cindy and their teammates. They held their own against many top women players, and beat tough teams even to get to the finals and final playoffs. This pair has had much success in the past; we are sure they will have even more in the future. Even if you did not capture the ultimate prize, applause for your great run!
