Thanks to all of you who responded to the MN State survey.  We are in process of making changes for next year's event and are reviewing all the great feedback.

That's Italian!

 

That Italy has produced some of the finest bridge players who have ever lived - and some of the most commanding teams in the world as a result - is no secret. Though other teams surely have vanquished the Italians, discounting their ability to win is generally a serious error.

Thus, it should be no surprise to anyone that in today's Koch Korner hand, John highlights dazzling declarer play by one of today's top Italian competitors, Norberto Bocchi.

Be sure to read the entire column!  An Italian from nearby - Paolo Ranaldi - shows that you can be situated in the states, and still know how to play the cards.

Holiday Sectional Tournament

Single digit temperatures - snow - ice ... Yep, winter has arrived in Minnesota!

Fortunately for bridge players, however - we can enjoy our game in the comfort of a local playing area, irrespective of weather.

Grab your favorite partner, put together your dream team - and head on over to the Bridge Center of St. Paul for the Holiday Sectional from December 5th to 7th. A fun schedule with pair/team games and a Swiss on Sunday is offered. Of course, I/N's are welcome with games designed just for them!

Volunteer Extraordinaire!

The bridge world depends greatly on our many wonderful volunteers. Sandy Casey shared with us the story of one such most valued volunteer, John Edmundson.

John Edmundson is a bridge director, teacher - and of course, player - from St. Paul. John has been a math teacher at the Institute of Production and Recording. But, he has recently signed on for his third assignment with the Peace Corps in Africa.

 

In 2007, John and his wife, Randy, accepted a 27 month assignment in Tanzania teaching math and science. Prior to leaving, they had to learn Swahili. When they got back to Minnesota, both returned to teaaching. John, however, accepted another assignment in 2012, teaching math in Liberia.

Once again, when John returned, he continued to teach math - in addition to directing bridge on Wednesday night, and teaching beginning bridge at the Bridge Center of St. Paul... Always with a friendly smile!

 

Recently, John was asked to return to Africa. This time, John will be working with math teachers in eight South African high schools, helping them to improve their math instruction skills.

 

John will be leaving in January; we will miss him! Please join me in wishing John the best!

MN State Sectional 2014 - Results

In the waning days of autumn, with pleasant weather still smiling down on the Twin Cities, we enjoyed three excellent days of bridge in Shakopee for this year's MN State Sectional.

Our thanks to Tournament Co-Ordinators Barb Zipoy and Linda Brammer, and all their volunteers for their organizing efforts. And, appreciation also to directors Mike Flader and two Tony Ames throughout the weekend.
