The Twin City bridge community has included players from kids to super seniors over the years. But, few have been active in our clubs for as long as Dorothy Goldstein. For decades, Dorothy was a vibrant and devoted member at the Twin City Bridge Center, competitive and feisty at the game as she was in all of life's events.
Getting closer and closer to the 100 mark finally did prevent Dorothy from competing at the table. Yet she remained sharp and lucid almost to her end. That final goodbye came this past weekend, as her large and loving family paid final respects to the lady who enjoyed life into her 98th year.
In the Orthodox tradition, Dorothy's funeral was held soon after her death. She was remembered as a woman with many interests, activities, a huge zest for life and family - and, of course, an avid bridge player, too.

Two of Minnesota's top players, Paul Meerschaert and Rob Schacter, had a dazzling run at the Philadelphia Nationals!
They began with a fabulous first session in the ACBL's toughest pair competition: the Platinum Pairs. With a little above average in the evening, they entered the 2nd day 9th on the list of qualifiers. With their hefty carryover, about average on Saturday meant they would make it to the final day. While they were a little under average, just making it to the third day of this "every trick matters" event is a fine accomplishment! Many world class pairs fail to make it past Day One.
For their next hat trick, the duo entered the Vanderbilt, along with teammates Mike Cassel and AndyKaufman. After advancing to the second day, they played a team you may recognize: John Diamond, Brian Platnick, Boye Brogeland and Espen Lindqvist. Team Cassel was ahead after both the 1st 2 sets, and only behind by 6 after 3 sets.
Alas; at the final bell, Team Diamond prevailed by 14 IMPS. Nevertheless, an excellent performance against a world class team.
After a non-descript regional pairs, Paul and Rob again ramped up their winning ways in the Silidor Pairs. A healthy almost 55% was followed by an enormous 64.38% game!
Day #2 of the Silidor was even better! Over 58% was scored in the afternoon; over 60% at night! When the smoke had cleared, Rob and Paul had secured 2nd place in the Silidor! For the masterpoint counters among us, that achievement earned the duo 93.75 masterpoints and their names and faces up in lights in the Daily Bulletin.
But - our Twin City dynamos were not done yet!
Their last two days were the NABC+ Fast Pairs. You must complete two boards within 10 minutes - or suffer automatic penalties. Paul and Rob did this handsomely Day #1 - earning a 63.39% the first session and almost 55% at night. After all this high level bridge, the second day was not their best. Nevertheless, they made the overalls of yet another event to end an incredible run.
Earning over 146 (!!) masterpoints put Rob and Paul high up on the overall masterpoint list. And, the points that they earned were enough to make Paul our 5th Platinum Life Master in Minnesota!
Applause to two of our state's finest players - and two of our nicest - for their impressive achievements! We couldn't be happier for you - nor more proud!

Rochester Duplicate Bridge Club
Sunday, March 5th, college teams from around the ACBL competed in an online tournament to earn a subsidized trip to Atlanta for the Collegiate Bridge Bowl. Our two fine Minnesota teams entered; one from University of Minnesota and one from Carleton College.
We are delighted to announce that the U of MN team finished 5th out of 18, with the Carleton team coming in 7th. The recap is here.
The event pays expenses for the first 4 finishers, so unfortunately our two teams were just out of the money. Nevertheless, we are quite proud of our college bridge players for doing so well in a tough field!
A big "well done" to the U of MN team: Morgan Johnstone, Sean McNally, Matt Moskal and Ben Popken, and also to our Carleton College team competitors: Alexander Frieden, Thomas Scruggs, Sophia Maymudes and Jeffrey Boitnott.
Six more packages will be awared, though! Four will go to the top finishers in the April 8th competition, and two in Daily CBO games. I'm sure our students will be working hard to compete more. Join me in wishing them the best down the road!
Year 2017 is safely tucked behind us! Now is the time to celebrate Minnesotans who have made it into the top 100 masterpoint holders as of December 31, 2017.

Currently, we have five Minnesotans who have reached over 10,000 points. Unfortunately, we lost another - a most treasured member of this group - who had also gone over 10,000: Larry Oakey.
But much to celebrate! This year, ACBL sent us not only a list of total points, but of points earned in 2017. Sharon Anderson had a super run! Her 990.64 was fewer than 10 points shy of 1,000! Very well done, Sharon.
Other notable hefty totals were earned by Roger Anderson, Terry Beckman, John Koch, Bjorgvin Kristinsson and Paul Meerschaert. Note that Paul is getting every closer to that 10K range; we fully expect to be reporting that he "goes over" in 2018.
We congratulate our top ten, and all the other top 100 masterpoint holders in our state, with the full list below.
Yet please remember. Fun as they are to win and collect, masterpoints are only a rough gauge of ability and achievement. Players have different commitments: family, jobs, volunteering, etc. - pocketbooks, time, health issues and so on and so forth. Some of us have smaller masterpoint totals - yet nevertheless are real toughies at the table!
In the meantime, however, please join me in celebrating the accomplishments of our Top 100! And here is to all of us having a fun 2018, filled with great bridge, friendships and adventure!
