Alert! Connie Nelson of St. Cloud, who sends us stupendous articles and lovely photos, sent this article to me to post some weeks ago. Unfortunately, your editor is having difficulty getting photos uploaded, so only one of Connie's marvelous photos (Chuck Head) can be seen. Big thanks to Connie for her great stories - and a plea from me to anyone who can help me to find out why I am having trouble loading photos! Thanks so much to Connie - and to any computer wizards out there!
Jim and I just got home from celebrating the 80th birthday of St. Cloud bridge player Chuck Head. Chuck was born in Louisiana and raised in San Antonio, Texas. His Southern roots were in evidence today – from his Western attire to our “southern fried chicken” meal. But for many years, Chuck has called St. Cloud home.
Yes! – we all received “Chuckles” candy for a treat!
Chuck and his wife Lois Head played weekly at the St. Cloud Bridge Club and traveled to many tournaments - up until COVID hit, that is. Lois was very aware of COVID as she wrote the invitation to Chuck’s party.
Here are a few of the verses:
Life Master or not,
Chuck wants you to stop;
Before or after your game;
He’ll welcome you the same.
Please offer your wishes
Without hugs or kisses;
Wearing your mask
Will be your best task.
Though hidden, your smiles
Will help mark his 80 “miles.”
Your gift of a song or a poem
Will mean Chuck won’t celebrate alone.
Find a seat on the deck
Or inside at a distance;
We’ll all remain healthy;
And grow old and wealthy;
If we follow the COVID rules
And don’t act like fools.
The party was hosted across several hours to space out visits, so we didn’t see all the bridge players who stopped.
