Many of our juniors who learned bridge have left MN for grad school
Yet they are still in love with The Greatest Game
And are continuing to do wonderfully!
Congrats to the top finishers - and may ALL have special 4th of July!

With the advent of Covid, many of us are aware that much of our beloved game ain't the way it usually is designed! Such is the case for District 14 GNT, 2020.
Six teams signed up to compete Saturday for GNT Open Flight. Four would survive - with those teams who qualified starting up again to select a winner in about a month. (Told you some changes this year!)
Congratulations (in order of placings) to Flader, Balderson, Ames and Cassel for qualifying - and - best of luck to all in your final matchups!

Congratulations to Genny Rice - one of Unit 103's star players who just achieved Diamond Life Master status! Genny is one of our "energizer bunny" players who keeps going and going - and now has reached a very high level of masterpoint achievement in the bridge world!
Our thanks Greg Caucutt, her fine partner and a talented player in his own right.
We are so happy for Genny - and delighted to give her a round of applause!

Despite the most tumultuous year in bridge since I have been your editor, we are proud to list the players who have won the most masterpoints as of year end 2020. And, as I have done many times in the past, I shall share my comments and thoughts with everyone. They both about the achievements of our players - and the reality that thrilling and fun as it is it to be on "the list" - we nevertheless must recognize that we each have our own unique lives.
Thus, although some players who have a nice chunk of monsterpoints may well have fewer than some above their count - we can't know for certain what exactly that means as players. Some of us have jobs - or families - that take up a good portion of our lives. Others have more free time to play bridge and are able to scoop up lots of masterpoints - along with our talents.
What we should know, however, is that those on the list love our incredible game, work hard at improving their bridge every year - and that, in the end, what matters is the joy of bridge, the friends we make, and the fascination that this amazing game can deliver to us, year after year, decade after decade.
Judy Hansen, to whom I am most appreciative for putting together this fine list of top masterpoint players, also wanted to be sure that we remember two of our best who, sadly, are no longer with us. Thus, our two In Memoriam Honorees for 2020 are:
Here is to 2021 being a not so crazy year - but a year filled with fun, fascination, learning and wins at the bridge table! Don't forget - it's the greatest game!

Curt - Ben - Kerry - Richard are #1
Congratulations to Curt and Ben Kristensen, with teammates Kerry Cotterell and Richard Underwood for winning the NAOBC 0-5000 KO yesterday. In Saturday’s semi-final they trailed by 10 at halftime. But they stormed back to win by 58.
In Sunday's final they trailed by 5 points at the halfway point. Yet they came back to win a hard-fought battle 79 - 65. In the process they won 64 gold points. Well done, guys!
From Proud Unit 103 President, Warren Nelson
*********************************************************************************************************************
Many years ago, on the final day of a Gopher Regional, my partner Bill Kent and I faced Curt Kristensen and his young son, Ben. I think that Ben was about 10 years old then. Vern and Monte Evans were our teammates, and we won the Swiss. Yet we did lose one match at our table, when the youngster at our table - BEN - beat us! I was quite impressed at the abilities Ben had at such a young age. And I was fortunate to be able to play with Ben a few times, too, over the years; quite the player!
Since then, Ben has competed in a number of major events, once knocking out the #1 team in the WORLD in the SPINGOLD when his team of juniors roughed them up! And Ben has earned other impressive titles.
Curt plays quite well himself, and surely has given Ben a wonderful foundation both as a player when he first started - and as a young man who has an array of fine qualities in addition to his bridge prowess. A round of applause for Curt and Ben - and here's to more successes!

Warren Nelson Reports on Successes by Unit 103 Competitors!
So Proud of these Great Showings!
KUDOS TO TERRY AND JOHN!
The NAP’s were held last Thursday and Friday online. In the prestigious Flight A event Unit 103 members Terry Beckman and John Koch finished 11th overall. 73 pairs were entered. Well done guys!
Keith Connolly (playing with Vern Swing) also entered. Unit 103 members Del Swanson and Gene Brandl played in the Flight B event. In the flight C event, Unit 103 member Peter Bock (playing with Sarah Emmons) was entered. Congratulations to all these players!
In other news, Duluth players Curt and Ben Kristensen will be playing in the semifinals (and finals, hopefully) of the 0 - 5000 KO this coming weekend. A total of 38 teams were entered in that event.
Nice going guys! Next week I will have a report on how they finished.

With many of our collegiate players now in different cities and schools
and only nicknames present, challenging to know who did what!
Yet we congratulate all our original Minnesota players who competed
and are so glad to see that many are continuing to heighten their games!
Here's to more events - with winter (we hope) slip sliding away!

Unit 178's President, Steve Gaynor, has been doing a marvelous job for bridge, particularly in light of all the challenges that have faced our game in the past year. Steve just sent results for both 178's Ace of Clubs top three competitors in each race and for the Mini-McKinney. (Each race shall have its own page.)
Congratulations to those who did so well - and here's to a new year of competing, learning, enjoying and BRIDGE!!!

Don't forget about the CBO Club Special Tournament
Monday, February 15!
Masterpoints and special prizes will be awarded!
*********************************************************************************************************
First through third place finishers will receive an Amazon gift card. Additionally, ACBL will draw the name of one random CBO tournament participant to receive a gift card.
You do need to be an ACBL member (only $5 for ages 25 and younger), have a BBO account (free) and be registered as a CBO member to participate in a CBO Tournament. Please note that it can take up to 24 hours to gain access to the CBO Club on BBO.
Our attendance in both the daily and special tournaments is down. Please encourage your friends to participate so that we can continue to offer these games if there is enough interest.
If you've never played in a CBO tournament before, simply log into BBO and click Competitive / Tournaments / All Tournaments or Free Tournaments / Collegiate. The CBO tournament should be first on the list.
If you have any bridge playing college friends, encourage them to join the CBO. Membership is open to any college undergrad or grad student age 35 and under. If you don’t have a student bridge org/club at your school, consider starting one.
We can help! www.acbl.org/college

As promised, President Steve Gaynor has also delivered our top Mini-McKenney masterpoint winner stats for 2020. Congrats to all who played, all who enjoyed and to all our players (and hoping MORE in 2021) who will delight in the fun and fascination of bridge - for many years to come!

It's December 1. Perhaps no one will ever read this (too late, Rich - I did! PK), but I thought I would post an update to Dr. John's advances.
Dr. John regularly plays 300-350 hands each week. (Google "BBO My Hands" and type in Gus94 and see for yourself!) He accumulates 50+points each month (google "BBO Points") playing 18-board tourneys on BBO. I only play with him Tuesdays at 7:15PM, but other people with more time on their hands give him several games per eek. I'm sure that Dr. John would like to be playing face to face again - and I find it amusing that he is now playing 4 times as much as he used to play with the migration to online bridge.
I sure hope I shall get the chance to play with him face to face sometime in 2021!
Rich Newell
Note - Peg again here. I'm not too swift on what can be done playing online with different friends, but I do believe that some areas area able to "cross over" and play with others from different clubs, cities and states.
Rich, if Dr. John is willing to play with some "foreigners" (ha ha ha), check around and see if some of our people are available!
