Peggy & Ally's points are well made - but an interesting question is how do we engage with other people in a genuine and real way? How do we meet on a personal level in spite of our fear of rejection etc? It seems to me that fear underlies all of this. I think this is why people rely on "slogans and edicts" rather than on "complex arguments and logic". There is a much higher chance of rejection if you use the latter rather than the former. Strangely enough religion is supposed to deal with fear, but in many cases it just seems to feed it.
