When the Anal Philosopher posted this, I had a hard time believing that he held such views so recently. He confirmed that he was, indeed, a recent convert to conservatism.
In a subsequent email, however, I told Keith that the terms "liberal" and "conservative" seemed to have such unclear meanings to me.
Here are my thoughts which Keith urged me to share with you.
These days, i'm not even sure what labels apply to which ideals and principles.
Years ago, i would have thought that so-called liberals would have applauded what happened today in Iraq... a people, under the boot of a murderous, torturous dictator, finally freed from him and actually risking their lives to vote! And the vote, for the most part, gets widespread turnout and, though some violence, not anywhere as much as some people feared.
You'd think all the liberals would be applauding & dancing in the streets!
But - what do we see? Reporters gritting their teeth to report the "grim" news of joy. The whackos still going on about how "well, big deal that there was a vote; the IMPORTANT stuff is still to come" and other idiocies, like the insurgents just "took a day off." (Yes, i really heard that on tv.)
I have always been a believer in smaller government and the rights of people to direct their own lives - aka, FREEDOM.
Just - silly me - I always thought that THIS was the "liberal" viewpoint - LOL!
Good news, however. Mercifully, there are still some who call themselves liberals who believe that it is the liberals who embrace freedom. Here are some statements from Lieberman, appearing on Fox News, that I rapidly transcribed:
"This is the sort of day when liberals - classical liberals - JFK liberals, woodrow wilson liberals ... should be dancing in the streets ... extraordinary event .... augers well for the future."
Partisanship ends at the nation's shores ... we need to see more of that again. Personally, emotionally moved."
We could not have imagined this two years ago."
When read what John Kerry said today, he said "I disagree with all of those statements."
When a tape of Ted Kennedy's speech is read, he says "I couldn't disagree more. The Iraqis couldn't have had a chance without the U.S. military."
