Help the poor.
Support for subsidies is actually beginning to take a real hit among deeply religious heartlanders in rural farm communities. One Iowa farmer is even running as a Republican for state agriculture commissioner on a platform that includes subsidy cuts. He cites Bible verses while arguing that subsidies to rich American farmers is hurting the world’s poor.
Another Republican farmer active in the subsidy debate says, “Instead of constantly sending food aid to Africa, we could do so much more to improve their lives if we make the markets fair. … Doesn’t this message fit with the Gospels?”
My thanks to Amy Ridenour for introducing me to this excellent new blog.
