The saddest part is the massive insecurity of their beliefs. The truth is most likely that they did not arrive at them by careful or even casual thought, but took them on wholesale to obtain acceptance or to appear upright in their own eyes. Anyone with a different opinion is a threat.

There would be one exception--those to whom having ideas is a weapon to dominate others. These people often are very clear about the basis of their ideas. But underneath that is also a massive insecurity that creates the need to dominate.
