Even during the days when there were fewer resources for news, one didn't need to rely on NPR. One could subscribe to the Economist and get coverage just as good as NPR's, if not better.

One of the oddities of the various liberals and leftists whom I know in this country is their unswerving dedication to various domestic news sources (NPR, the NY Times, The Nation, etc.) and their utter indifference to any foreign sources. This is pretty strange for people who think of themselves as so cosmopolitan compared with the rest of us.
