NPR and other non-profits can pay out such generous severances (and salaries) because they don't pay taxes. Property taxes? Nope. FUTA? Nope. Sales? Income? Nope, nope. In my next life, I'm coming back as a non-profit. The term sounds so noble, and it's used by so many, from radio stations to hospitals to apartment building owners, to evade taxation. Every business exists to make a profit; without it, they go out of business. But non-profits exist to evade taxes.
